Web Hosting Advice

What sort of Web Hosting is good for me?”

There are Generally 3 server types, and 2 platforms that you can host on.

Server types: Shared/ Virtual Private Server (VPS/VDS)/ Dedicated Server

Platform: Windows / Linux

To find the one that is right for you, you will need some information.

1. Are you, or your designer coding the Website in asp.net?

2. Are you, or your designer going to use an MS SQL database or My SQL?

3. Do you or your Designer Need root access to install special programs/applications?

3a. How technically savvy are you or your designer?

4. How many Visitors do you expect to get?

Answer’s:

1. If you or your Designer are going to use asp.net then you will need a Windows platform, as Unix Web Hosting cannot run .net programming.

2. If need MS SQL then you will need a Windows Platform. If your going without a database or are going to use My SQL most hosting companies allow this on both platforms.

3. If you need Root access to the Server, you will need (in most cases) a VPS or Dedicated Server. Now there are some hosting companies that will give you shell access on a shared web hosting server, so its very important that you ask or verify that you have shell access. Ask if they offer this on there shared platform first, you may be able to save a few bucks if they do.

3a. If you are uncomfortable with code, then you do not belong on a VPS Web Hosting or Dedicated Server. Even if you are comfortable with code, its more than likely that you will not be successful with the shell, as this requires server specific knowledge that most web site owners simply do not have. Don’t worry, 99 times out of a hundred a VPS or Dedicated server isn’t required to run a successful site.

4. If you are a brand new website owner, or have less than 5,000 visitors a month, then a shared web hosting platform should suffice. If you have more than 5,000 visitors a month, most shared web hosting servers begin to slow your website down, or shut you off all together and a VPS is more likely a better choice. If you have a couple thousand page website, are planning on a full paid search engine optimization program, require your own programs to run on the server, are running an online gaming site then you more than likely will need at least a VPS and a Dedicated Server is recommended.

Now if none of the above applies to you, or your just plain brand new to web hosting, then you will want a Shared Linux web hosting server. Which is good news, as this is the lowest cost / Cheapest Web Hosting available. 80% of all websites are run on a linux/Unix server. You don’t need to have Linux/Unix, as this only pertains to your website, and your home computer has nothing to do with what we are talking about.
